Eagle Scout Projects with the City
The City of Bainbridge Island is excited to support and collaborate with youth completing service projects, particularly Scouts USA Eagle Scout projects. The City is also open to working on final projects for other groups such as the Girl Scouts or Campfire Youth.
We appreciate your interest in public service.
Contacting Bainbridge Island City staff
The City wants you to successfully complete your project. We believe that frequent communication is important and will provide you with the appropriate contacts once the project is finalized.
For general questions, please contact the Executive Department.
Eagle Scout Projects
The Eagle Scout workbook introduction includes the following explanation:
“Service to other people is what Scouting is all about. In many ways, your service project reflects who you are as a youth leader. Your result should be of significant impact in your community to be special, and should represent your very best effort.
Your proposal, the logical first step, should emphasize your intention to give leadership to others through proper planning and development. Communicate with the beneficiary often to ensure the project meets the organization’s needs once it is completed.”
In this spirit, the City is ready to discuss what you see as a project that will benefit the community, as well as satisfying the Eagle Scout requirements. Please:
- Fill out the City of Bainbridge Island Eagle Project Application, which will provide us with necessary information about your proposed project and will help ensure that the project is started in a timely manner.
- Return the completed application, along with submitting the Volunteer Services Agreement form.
The City will review the application, ask for additional information if needed, and reach out to let you know if the project can be approved. If your first idea isn’t workable for some reason, we can work with you to adjust the scope and details to create a more feasible project.
Funding the Project
Identifying the funding for the project and completing fundraising may be an important part of your project. The City of Bainbridge Island is not able to provide funding for projects. It is the responsibility of the Scout to provide funding for the project through donations of time, material and/or money from members of the community. The City may, on a case-by-case basis, be able to pay permit fees for projects.
Types of Projects
The City of Bainbridge Island provides a wide array of services. If you are struggling to think of a project, see the list of suggestions below, which may help give you an idea. If you want to ask questions about a potential project, please contact the Executive Department (email, phone). Please remember, it is your responsibility as a Scout, to approach the city with your own idea for a project and then to work closely with the city to finalize the proposal. Please look around the Island and see what you think would be a good project.
The project ideas below are very general, with the intention to encourage you to recognize and identify possibilities that are interesting to you. Please keep in mind that the City of Bainbridge Island will not approve general maintenance projects. Please also keep in mind that in addition to the City of Bainbridge Island organization, there is a separate Fire Department, School District, and Parks District. We can help you know which property belongs to the City, and if not, who owns the property.
The following are suggestions for Eagle Scout projects related to the City:
- Choose a topic related to the City that you want to educate the community about. Develop materials about that topic and organize people to be at a table for a City-related issue at the National Night Out celebration held in August each year.
- Design, create and install an interpretive sign at the Johnson Farm.
- Create a video on an issue that you have researched related to the City. Include other people in the video.
- Design and present an activity, event or materials that involve youth in City government.
- Plan and construct benches or seating for public spaces.
Application Process
When you are ready to begin to plan your project, fill out the application to start with the City. As soon as we have the necessary information, we can begin the process of assisting you with your project. Once the application has been completed, please return it to the City of Bainbridge Island City Hall or e-mail it here.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Executive Department.
