The City of Bainbridge Island launches Housing Action Plan to address City housing needs

City leaders hoping to hear from Island residents and employees through a survey

Bainbridge Island, Wash., (August 2022) – The City of Bainbridge Island is developing a Housing Action Plan (HAP) to identify strategies that can improve diversity in housing and housing options. The City is asking residents and employees of the Island to take part in a 10-minute survey gathering information on community experiences and thoughts on housing. Islanders and those who work on the Island have until September 30, 2022 to complete the survey, available here:

The HAP is supported by data, community engagement and a review of policies and existing conditions and will be tailored specifically for the unique needs of Bainbridge Island.  The HAP will also be a critical tool for the City in identifying barriers to affordability.

In 2022, the City received a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to develop this HAP. This grant requires Bainbridge Island to:

  • Address both affordable and market rate housing needs at a variety of price points.
  • Address demand for different types of housing and needs for the next twenty years.
  • Develop strategies for the whole community.

“The City of Bainbridge Island is hoping to hear from a wide range of people as part of this Housing Action Plan -- from people who have lived here for years, to newcomers and employees who live off the Island,” City Manager, Blair King, said. “By understanding diverse perspectives, we can develop housing actions that create a vibrant community in the years to come.”

The City also has a survey available for employers to hear their experiences with hiring and retaining staff given Bainbridge’s existing housing market. This employer survey is also open until September 30, 2022 and can be accessed here:
