The City of Bainbridge Island Planning and Community Development Department is currently working on the Island Center Subarea Planning Process and is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies for the project’s Steering Committee.
The subarea planning process is designed to develop a plan that enhances the livability of the City by recognizing the special characteristics of Island Center -- located at the crossroads of Miller and New Brooklyn Roads near a gas station, auto repair shops, Bainbridge Rental, Sawatdy Thai Cuisine and Bainbridge Gardens -- and by providing opportunities to accomplish the goals of the City’s Comprehensive Plan in a way unique to each designated center or neighborhood. For this process to be successful, we need community involvement.
According to the Bainbridge Island Municipal Code (Section 2.16.210.E), the Steering Committee shall include representatives from the following groups:
a. Residents living within and/or owners of property or businesses within the designated center or neighborhood; and
b. Residents and owners of property located adjacent to the designated center or neighborhood; and
c. Residents of and/or business owners in the city, not residing within or adjacent to the designated center or neighborhood
The Steering Committee was formed in November 2017 and members are working through the subarea planning process to address issues such as current and future land uses, natural resources, transportation, trails and other non-motorized facilities, utilities, and public facilities and amenities. The result of a subarea planning process is a subarea (or neighborhood) plan which will be incorporated into the Comprehensive Plan.
The City anticipates the Island Center Subarea Planning Process will continue for a year. Members of the Steering Committee meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month at Congregation Kol Shalom, located at 9010 Miller Road. All meetings are open to the public, with opportunities for public comment. The next Steering Committee meeting is on Wednesday, September 5 at Congregation Kol Shalom.
Applications for the Island Center Subarea Planning Process Steering Committee can be found on the Form Center, and must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7. Committee interviews will take place in late September.
In addition, there will be an update on the Island Center Subarea Planning Process at the City Council Business Meeting on Tuesday, August 28.
